When an individual's debt exceeds his or her ability to repay those obligations, it is time to take action. While some people are able to dig themselves out of debt, many others turn to Chapter 7 bankruptcy to eliminate debt and gain a fresh financial start. An example is found in the recent filing by actress Tisha Campbell and her husband of 20 years, both California residents.
Campbell is best known for her role on the hit television show "Martin," where she played the girlfriend of comedian and actor Martin Lawrence. She went on to play various other roles in film and television, and she has also recorded multiple singles. Her husband has also appeared on television and film. In addition to their artistic work, the couple also own a restaurant and a production company.
When their finances were strong, the couple took on debt, as is the case for many American families. However, when things began to falter, they found that they could no longer make their monthly debt service. According to their bankruptcy filing, the couple brings in approximately $7,655 per month but has debt that sits at nearly twice that amount. They owe a total of nearly $15 million, which is divided between various auto loans and leases, credit cards, student loans and debts to many individual companies.
As this example shows, finding oneself in need of financial relief is not limited to those who make poor financial decisions or have an inability to earn a decent living. Campbell and her husband have achieved a high level of success in their careers, but they are now turning to Chapter 7 to help alleviate some of their financial strain. California residents should note that anyone can find that same level of relief, even if they have not obtained celebrity status.
